Career center professionals already know how important it is for students to get some type of professional experience before they graduate and move on to the world of working full-time. Whether it’s an internship or a part-time job in their desired field, students should certainly be doing something before graduation to dip their toes into the professional world. That being said, it’s not always easy for students to balance the stress of schoolwork with the added pressure of performing in a work environment. In order to help your students achieve a balance between succeeding in both areas, consider the following advice.

Higher education action group Universities UK and Pinsent Masons law firm have recently released a report providing new guidance to universities in the United Kingdom about handling incidents of sexual violence on campus. The report was prompted by a new influx of rape investigations occurring in the UK that is causing concern to administrators and campus communities.

You’re confident that your college or university is providing students with an enriching, well-rounded education when it comes to academics, but are you sure you’re providing them with the life skills they’ll need once they graduate? A student can graduate with a 4.0 GPA, but if they don’t have a firm grasp on what it means to be an adult entering the “real world,” they are bound to face difficult times. Below are five topics you should incorporate into your school’s electives or campus workshops to ensure that your students are fully prepared to leave the comfortable college nest and excel in both their professional and personal lives.

• Accessibility

Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act lays out a variety of rules for companies that hold contracts or subcontracts with the federal government. These rules dictate that the companies must take affirmative steps towards hiring individuals with disabilities (IWDs). The section is part of the larger Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the goal of which is to prevent discrimination based on disability. If a federal contractor or subcontractor doesn’t understand Section 503, the consequences of their hiring practices could prove costly.

The free Careers by Symplicity app provides a multitude of capabilities for students, and one of its most helpful features is its ability to guide students through the entire career fair process. Before students attend a career fair (which they can find and register for all within CSM), first make sure they know about and have downloaded the app, then remind them to do the following.

From October 9th – 15th, It’s On Us is leading the Week of Action movement towards eradicating sexual assault on college campuses. It’s On Us is a dedicated organization that seeks to inform schools and students about what can be done to eliminate sexual assault at higher ed institutions.
